A look into SCDOT's Past: 1943 – 1968
Growth of the highway system was virtually non-existent in 1943 as World War II raged on. This country’s war effort consumed most of the resources and jobs. When peace came about in 1945, South Carolina Highway Department (SCHD) got back to the business of building South Carolina roadways to be the best in the country. The dawn of the Interstate Highway system also began.
