A look into South Carolina's roadways: The past 100 years

In 1920, South Carolina had just 3,037 miles of roadway – and only 26 miles were paved roads. In 2017, SCDOT maintains over 41,000 miles of roads. That figure includes 851 miles of interstate highways. The total mileage ranks South Carolina as having the fourth largest state highway system in the nation.
